Life as an ECT

In September 2021 Barnet welcomed 0 ECTs into their schools and they are currently flourishing.
In September 2020 Barnet welcomed 0 ECTs into their schools and 100% of this cohort, who completed the year, passed.
Once you become an early career teacher in Barnet, you will be supported every step of the way by your school and your mentor and by the national ECT programme of training and development and its materials but you will also be supported and developed by meeting regularly with your contemporaries in the local authority e.g. there are network groups for all KS1 ECTs or for all secondary maths ECTs.

Added to this, individual Barnet schools adopt a variety of professional development methods to support their ECTs inhouse and ensure ECTs have the very best start to their career. This professional development includes shared planning meetings, mentor coaching and support, observing outstanding practitioners in your own school, team teaching, lesson modelling and much more..

As an ECT in Barnet, you will be supported and developed under the new Early Career Framework which will entitle you to two years of support from a designated mentor. You are entitled to 10% of your timetable out of class (on top of your PPA time) in your first year and 5% in your second year. You will have two formal assessments during your ECT development and will have regular progress reviews between these assessment points.
